Quicktime and AVI movies (You can get the QuickTime player from Apple's web site)

On April 16, 2000, the city of Folsom re-dedicated a bridge that was originally built in Folsom, was sold to another county in the late 1920s/early 1930s, then this year brought back to Folsom. This edited clip was shown on KXTV (Channel 10) in Sacramento, California that evening on the 10PM news.

I'm riding at a slow walking pace because of the crowd (lead by photographers walking backwards to take pictures of everyone--say, doesn't that make the photographers the first ones across?! Who took their photo?). Riding this slow isn't all that much fun, as you have to be ready to get off without warning. Lucky for me I was near that high railing, and when the pace got too slow I grabbed the rail and waited for some space to open up in front of me.

You'll see another old bicycle behind me; that's an 1893 Columbia, built the same year as the bridge.

Download the quicktime movie that's at http://homepage.mac.com/rhowehmd/Inreach/AntiqueBikesImages/FolsomBridge.mov. I used a digital camera to take some tiny little AVIs at the 2002 Wheelmen Meet:

This one shows Nolan Bay riding his Gormully & Jeffery along the route of the century ride. This was a practice ride to get us acquainted with the route.

At the turn-around point we all stopped. Some folks came by to chat and asked the unsual "how do you get on" question. Right then someone was getting ready to ride back, so I said "Watch that person..." and also took a mini-movie.

Here's one of my favorites: On the last day we had races, and this is one of the sprints.

Photos

Four wheelmen and their wheels at the 1995 Good Roads Centennial meet.

Here's a photo of (from left to right) Karl Edwards, Jack Seeben, Robert Howe, and Jacques Graber, pausing on our ride to celebrate California's "good roads" movement centennial anniversary. Photo taken in April 1995. (Click on the photo for a JPEG, 199K).

Robert Howe and his Columbia Expert highwheel in Yosemite valley, 1986

This is me and my 54-inch 1888 Columbia Expert at Yosemite. The photo was taken in 1986 when The California Wheelmen had their meet in Yosemite. It's probably high time we had another meet there! (Click on the photo for a JPEG, 28K).
